Tiger's Den

Tiger's future home.... Near a big body of fresh water. Away from the big city. South facing - arable land. Geothermal..... http://countryhomebuilding.blogspot.com.

Scenario 1: Nothing happens
Result: We have a nice weekend getaway.

Scenario 2: Catastrophy
Result: An option to get away from the city - close to fresh water - fish - deer. The deer won't last much longer than a season. The fish, maybe 2-3 seasons. Arable land... Farm nearby. Town of a few thousand nearby.

World's hottest pepper

When I broke open my organically grown Habaneros and accidentally scratched my nose, my face was on fire for 1 hour. Nothing worked, not milk, not cream, nothing. I just had to bear the pain. My brother in-law gave me a couple of Bhut Jolokia - that stuff SMELLS HOT. I'm attempting to germinate the seeds. This thing is 3-5 times as hot as a Habanero. Why am I doing this?

Geothermal an option for the Peak?

So. We're currently deciding whether we should go Geothermal for heating / cooling our new place. Geothermal is great - use 1 unit of electricity, get 3-5 units of heat out of the ground (or lake). However, geothermal uses compressors and pumps, all of which have very large startup currents, which would require an enormous battery bank / inverter / solar (PV) system. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Feel free to leave comment.

Been a long time since my last post

It's been a while since my last post. I have been working on a big project - part of the plan to be close to fresh water, away from the metropolis, and close to food source (fish, deer, and turkeys). It's a populated lake however and not sure how long resources would last, but should last longer than our old cottage in Bancroft (which is a much longer drive as well). We're thinking of geothermal as well! Stay tuned.

BP, and my new greenhouse!

BP has really made a mess of things down in the Gulf. They had the solution since day one: implode the well by setting off some explosives - it's not that big a hole - cave in some rock and you've got your solution - gusher stopped. But no, they have to save their precious well, at everyone else's expense. Even this relief well, to be completed in August is to give a 'solution' by extracting more oil. I can't believe Obama is letting them get away with this farce.

On a happier note I just finished building my greenhouse in the backyard. No more artificial lighting required, we're gonna use the power of the Sun folks:
